Host Monster – I Detest Thee!!!

This is a vent post.  If you do not appreciate rants, please feel free to look around for happier ones in my Archives.  Thanks!

My sites were down again today for 3 hours!  After 3 phone calls to Host Monster with no real updates, they just magically popped back up.  This is the 5th or 6th time that they have been down during the day within the last month or so and I am frustrated.

I am frustrated because I am busy.  I am busy with my job.  I am busy with my friends and family.  I am busy with blogging.  I hate the fact that I now should take the time to switch to a better host.  ARGH!  Why can’t the host I have just work right?!

I have a billion things that should or need to get done.  All I ask is that once I handle something, it works.  I “handled” the hosting problem 7 months ago when I switched from Blogger to WordPress and signed up with Host Monster, so now I just expect that to be taken care of.  One thing down, right?  But no…now I have to look into other hosts because I chose a cruddy one with constant server problems.  Double ARGH!!!

So, here is a quick glance at my evening plans:

1)  Let out dogs.
2)  Feed dogs.
3)  Throw turkey into oven so I can cut it up for transport tomorrow.
4)  Check email.
5)  Make sweet potatoes for tomorrow.
6)  Wrap my mom’s birthday gift.
7)  Remember to pack up everything in the car except for the food.
8)  Blog a bit – either reply to comments or write some posts.
9)  Medicate allergy-ridden Pug.
10)  Go to bed after the turkey is handled, a post-it note is stuck on the door reminding me to pack the food, and my dogs are put into the kitchen.

Somewhere in there, I will be looking for a new host probably.  :-(

I am completely blowing off almost all chores.  We aren’t having anybody over until Friday night, so the house can just stay messy until then…

So, how has your day been so far?  Do pop up problems tick you off too?

  • I’ve been happy with HostGator. I’m running a dozen or so sites with no downtime that I’ve noticed and no problems. The one issue I needed them to deal with because it wasn’t available in the interface was fixed in minutes.

They are supposed to be having a killer sale on Friday.

  • @Jason, woot! I’ll be looking on Friday! I didn’t know you had so many sites – are any of the others blogs as well?

  • I’m glad I wasn’t the only one in a ranty mood today.

A busy executive friend of mine said that despite how uber busy her life is, she manages to cram it all in. What kills her are the unexpected and unplanned things that she hasn’t managed to fit into her life yet (like your hostmonster problem)…or in general anything breaking when it shouldn’t have. Oh getting into a fender bender, or any of those things.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday. Even if your site is down this weekend, traffic will likely be low anyway, so just enjoy your turkey and chill. Have a great weekend.

  • @Crystal, they are having screaming good deals.

Here is part of the email they sent out to their affiliates:

    We’re offering 50% OFF EVERYTHING From 12:00AM CST – 5AM CST

We’re offering 80% OFF EVERYTHING From 5AM – 9AM CST WHILE SUPPLIES LAST (first come, first receive; so definitely don’t miss out!)

From 9AM – 11:59PM CST OR after 80% OFF accounts have sold out, we will continue to offer 50% OFF EVERYTHING

This applies to ALL Accounts and ALL Term Lengths. So you’re visitors and friends will have the opportunity to receive up to 80% off of up to 3 years worth of Hosting! That would come out to $35.64 for 3 FULL YEARS!

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s good for existing customers, which makes me sad. It did, however, make me sign up as an affiliate.

So, if you want to put a smile on my face:

  • @Crystal, I have one other actual blog, but it’s been mostly inactive since I started LRN. It’s a crime/politics blog which is just a depressing topic after a while.

Another is a blog tracking home invasions in Minnesota. Depressing. It’s private at the moment until I can make sure that it’s safe from Righthaven lawsuits.

I’ve also got a few affiliate market sites, a couple of business ventures, and a couple of domains that aren’t doing anything at all, yet. I need find a round tuit. Once I get that, the rest of the domains will get put to use.

I’ll 2nd Jason’s recommendation of HostGator, they’re generally technically competent at what they do, plus they’re a local Houston company.

  • @First Gen, I hope you are having a great weekend too!

@Jason, thanks! I actually am switching to Host Gator this week! Forest is moving my blogs over Monday, lol. Even though I tuned in at 5:15 am, they only had their 50% off deal going…Forest sent me his link first, sorry. But I will definitely pass yours on to others since I’m a huge Host Gator fan now. :-)

    @SirKerry, I didn’t know they were Houston-based, cool!

  • From what I heard, they sold out of the 80% deals in 8 minutes.
