I’ve been asked a few times about my schedule or how I built up Budgeting in the Fun Stuff so quickly, so I thought it would be good to have a post to refer to in the future. Here’s my most recent response – I’ll post again in the future if/when something changes:
Posting
I post on Budgeting in the Fun Stuff every day, 7 days a week, Crystal Clear Thoughts on M-W-F-Sat, and It’s a Dog’s Life For Me on M-W-F. I also am a staff writer for Sweating in the Big Stuff every Wednesday and I guest post all over occasionally as well. Yep, I’m a full blown addict.
Hours
My full time job is Monday through Friday from 7:30am-4:30pm but the work comes in a few waves a day, which means I can do blog stuff in between the waves (that’s about 2-3 hours a day). I also blog Monday through Thursday evening for at least 2 hours and at least a few hours on Saturday and Sunday. Friday night is usually my night off although I will do stuff if plans fall through. Most of my social life is during parts of the day on the weekends.
I’d guess I spend at least 30-40 hours a week on writing posts, replying to comments, reading other blogs and commenting, keeping up with the Yakezie, and submitting to blog carnivals. I’m looking for a new job so will probably have to cut out that 15 hours while at work if I find something else…
I don’t have a set schedule, but if I don’t have posts scheduled at least one week in advance on BFS, I will spend a part of either Saturday or Sunday catching up.
Please keep in mind that many way more successful bloggers probably do not put this much time into it and probably run things way differently. I have no idea if my crazy schedule is the key to success – it’s just my schedule – no more, no less.
If you run a blog or more, what is your blogging schedule? Do you know of any real keys to success?
I remember us discussing this question on the Yakezie forums. Your schedule is way over my head.
You seem really busy… I thought about my blogging schedule and decided I will try to post three times a week. We’ll see how it goes.

@Aloysa, your thread at the Yakezie reminded me to post this here too – I’ve been asked before and just named off some stuff without taking the time to really evaluate it all. Thanks for getting me to finally put it in writing! My personal goal is to streamline this a bit and get it down to 25 hours a week or less…
Good luck with your new 3 post a week schedule!
You’re asking the same question I have! I tend to post 3 times a week, with an occasional 4th (usually updates and favorites). With my schedule, that tends to be about what I can do. I try to pick my spots and read/comment on other blogs as much as I can, but there never seems to be enough time.
I think it’s probably beneficial to carve out dedicated time on a semi-flexible schedule, to get stuff done and keep it lots of fun. That may be the route I go. For now, it’s just finding time whenever I can. I don’t spend nearly as much time as you do, but wish I was able to! That’s cool that you can do so for now.
No idea on the keys to success!
I tend to do a morning blog check before DS gets up. Then one at lunch and one in the evening. I’m not sure when Maggie does things… often a post or comment will appear in the middle of the night or during the day. I think her sleep schedule is a lot less set than mine is. Man, I’m a really crappy stalker.
We post 7 days a week. Saturday is a link roundup. We work on that throughout the week, though sometimes we scramble on it Friday night.
I have no idea when or how we write so many posts. There’s no set schedule, we just do. I think a lot come on weekends. And we often will start out a post with just a title, or a title and an outline and gradually fill in the details. Sometimes we’ll be chatting and one of us will say, Dude, that totally needs to go on the blog, so it will.

@Squirrelers, I think 3 times a week works great. I only post everyday because I can and enjoy getting pov’s all the time on different topics…
@Nicole, I thought it would be harder to run a blog jointly than by oneself…I never thought of the sweet benefits like joint weekly roundups and not having to write all posts by yourself…
It helps that Maggie and I think as one. Except that one of us likes mushrooms and the other doesn’t. Well, and one of us is really into shoes and the other thinks of them as torture devices.
@Nicole, shoes are torture devices and mushrooms taste as good as whatever they are mixed with…like tofu…
Argh, I cannot tell you if I agree or not because that would be breaking the code of our About.

I have zero schedule, I write when the inspiration hits me. I probably have my priorities screwed up though because I read other blogs and comment before I sit down and write posts.
I post usually 6 days a week, but I am not nearly as scheduled in the future as you are. But then again, you are a superstar!!!

@Nicole, I always wanted to ask – why do you and Maggie or Maggie and you both comment as “Nicole” and don’t disclose who’s who? I think it’s funny except I can’t really bond with each of you separately…it’s like an entity instead and I never know which one of you will agree with me or not…
@Everyday Tips, you always make me smile. With your life ascrazy as it is, I’m constantly amazed that you post so often!
We don’t both comment as Nicole. She comments as Maggie. She comments more on non-PF blogs. If you check out our blogroll you can catch her in action. On the blog itself, we’ll differentiate ourselves by #1 and #2 if it’s something we’re not of one mind on. (#1 is the person who started the post initially). We’re intentionally being confusing there, because we’re evil like that.
And we are a bit worried about having the world find out who we are, especially professionally. We grumble about things on a blog that would be difficult to grumble about at work. The more universal our experience is, the safer we will be.
Nicole recently posted..Should I tell my mom I have a blog
@Nicole, okay, that makes sense. I barely ever have seen any Maggie posts since we don’t overlap as much with the blogs we read, but now I’ll keep an eye out. I noticed you differentiated yourselves as #1 or #2 but it doesn’t help much since that always changes, lol. I understand the anonymity issues with work. I do love y’alls blog, so I’ll stop whining.
I try to post at least 5 days a week (sometimes 6), but that includes a weekly roundup and a weekly CVS deals/shopping trip post!

@Khaleef, I noticed you were busy! Good luck with your schedule too!
I have been blogging every second day there abouts. In fact I have a lot more material than that (mostly sitting in scribbles in my note book – a real pen and paper note book). I have just scheduled them out for the next few weeks. I was a bit concerned that I would burn out after a period of time, so wanted some back up material in case that occurred. Maybe I should stretch myself a bit more to 6 days a week.
@Jim, I have a notebook of ideas too. I only use it once or twice every few weeks since ideas pop into my head when I sit down to write, but it is nice to have backup on those days that my mind is blank.
I’m so glad that someone can actually work as a full time blogger – I wish I could. I try to post at least twice on my blog http://gethappylife.com .
, because I was in serious motivational writing crisis the last few days.
This post really motivated me to write my next

My goodness, that’s crazy… I just started my blog 2 month ago and I’m posting about 3-4 post a week. If you post more often, does it necessary mean that you’ll be able to make this full time faster? Maybe I should wake up early and create more posts? I’m still trying to find my voice. I do have a question though… do you purposefully have multiple blog going at the same time? Is that a strategic move to create some synergy that each blogs can leverage on? Thanks.
